Following a surprise first-place finish in Alabama's Republican primary for lieutenant governor, former Alabama Republican Party (ALGOP) chairman John Wahl spoke to 1819 News about his victory.

"This is an incredible feeling. My campaign has been all about limited government, freedom, lower taxes, less regulations and really putting people back in control of government," Wahl said on Tuesday evening. "I'm so thankful that the people of Alabama spoke loud and clear tonight that they want a political outsider, they want a conservative who's going to fight for the rights and freedoms and not back down."

Wahl referenced a public poll released less than two weeks ago that had his election odds at 13 to 30.

"To see the people of Alabama come out and just smash those polling results and speak clearly about the candidate they wanted in this race, I think it says a lot about where we're headed as a state moving forward," he stated.

Wahl added, "It's time that Alabama led the nation when it comes to conservative principles, when it comes to defending people's rights and freedoms. People of Alabama are tired of politicians who don't do what they say and who don't get the job done. I am unapologetically not a career politician. I want to be the outsider. I want to be someone who gets in there and changes Montgomery for the better."

"To have the support of the people of the state and the President of the United States of America in this, as part of this conservative movement, is something that is beyond words that I can explain," he concluded.

Wahl is headed into a runoff election against Alabama Secretary of State Wes Allen after neither candidate garnered 50% of the vote. The winner of that race will face State Rep. Phillip Ensler (D-Montgomery) in November's general election.
