According to a recent poll, U.S. Sen. Tommy Tuberville (R-Auburn) is the heavy favorite in a hypothetical matchup against Democrat and former U.S. Sen. Doug Jones (D-Mountain Brook) in the upcoming 2026 governor's race.

The DC-based research firm Cygnal conducted the poll by surveying 605 likely 2026 general election voters in mid-November.

Cygnal offered an "executive assessment" on a possible Tuberville-Jones rematch.

"Former U.S. Senator Doug Jones was beaten by U.S. Senator Tommy Tuberville in the 2020 election, a race that saw one of the largest defeats for a sitting U.S. Senator in recent history," the firm said. "If Jones decides to go on a futile mission in the 2026 gubernatorial election, he will meet a blowout defeat."

The polling shows Jones would be soundly defeated by Tuberville at the ballot box should he enter the race for governor.

Per the survey, Tuberville currently has a 19-point lead over Jones 53% to 34% on the ballot. Swing voters "break for the Republican at a 2:1 ratio, 46% compared to Jones' 21%." Additionally, high-propensity voters (who voted in four of the last four elections) favored Tuberville 57% to Jones' 36%.

Cygnal said that "decided voters lean Trump, are conservative and will vote for Tuberville." Voters who are undecided on the gubernatorial ballot lean 43% to 26% for the generic Republican. These voters find Trump net favorable. They are 56% conservative and only 29% moderate.

Jones recently hinted at a possible run during a Birmingham event.

"Stay tuned," he told the crowd when asked about a possible run.
