Former President Donald Trump on Thursday closed out the 2024 Republican National Convention with an emotional speech in which he accepted the GOP presidential nomination just days after narrowly escaping an assassination attempt.

Trump recounted his assassination attempt and called for an end to the "discord and division" in the country.

"Tonight, whether you've supported me in the past or not, I hope you will support me in the future because I will bring back the American Dream," Trump said. "That's what we're going to do. You don't even hear about the American Dream. With great humility, I am asking you to be excited about the future of our country."

Immediately following the conclusion of the convention, two lawmakers from Alabama praised the GOP nominee's speech, calling it "powerful."

"What a powerful & heartfelt speech by President Trump tonight!" U.S. Rep. Gary Palmer (R-Hoover) posted on Twitter. "So proud that he is our nominee. Just days after an assassin tried to end his life, President Trump stood in front of the American people and laid out a vision that shows that he is the leader our nation needs at this moment in our history. He [possesses] the strength that can get us back on track and Make America Great Once Again. President Trump will not let us down!"

He continued, "For the last four days, the country saw a united Republican Party that is energetic and eager to elect our nominee in November. The contrast with the Democratic Party couldn't be more clear. We are the party that wants to improve the quality of life for hard working Americans by fighting inflation, fixing our southern border, and restore our standing around the world. Voters will have a clear choice in November no matter who the Democrats put on the ballot."

"By the grace of God, President Trump is with us tonight," U.S. Sen. Katie Britt (R-Montgomery) wrote on Twitter. "His speech was a powerful, hopeful call for unity and a return to the exceptionalism that made America the greatest nation ever known. Together, we'll defeat decline and division, dust off our dreams, and forge our future."
