With little time to spare, the Alabama Senate passed House Bill 220 (HB220) sponsored by House Speaker Nathaniel Ledbetter (R-Rainsville) and Speaker Pro-Tem Chris Pringle (R-Mobile) that provides the governor, lieutenant governor, the speaker of the House, the president pro-tempore of the Senate, and minority leaders in the House and Senate with the authority to remove and replace any member of a board, authority, or commission that they appoint.

The House concurred with the Senate's changes, and the bill will go to the governor for her signature.

The Senate changes include adding the lieutenant governor and the minority leaders of the House and Senate. Changes also specified that it does not authorize the governor to remove any individual whom the governor previously appointed to fill a vacancy of an elected office.

It also does not apply to the Alabama State Port Authority, the State Ethics Commission, or to the governing board of any two-year or four-year public institution of higher education.

If signed by the governor, the bill will go into effect on October 1.
