Following a third assassination attempt on President Donald Trump, U.S. Sen. Tommy Tuberville (R-Auburn) is calling for Democrats to stop holding up the months-delayed funding for the Department of Homeland Security (DHS).

Democrats in Congress have blocked the advancement of a funding package for months, holding out for reforms they want to see specifically in immigration enforcement.

Thus far, Senate Republican leadership has not tried to squeeze DHS funding through budget reconciliation, which would require only a 51-vote majority. As it stands, full funding for the Coast Guard, Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), Transportation Security Administration (TSA), Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), and other agencies remains stalled amid the gridlock.

After a gunman was arrested at Saturday night's White House Correspondents' Dinner, Tuberville and other Republican lawmakers emphasized the need for heightened national security.

The senator, and current Alabama gubernatorial candidate, took to social media to blast the Democrats' continued stall tactics, blaming them for putting lives at risk by ignoring the threats of natural disaster and continued political violence.

"To every Communist Democrat: Wild fires have destroyed thousands of homes," Tuberville wrote. "Tornadoes are devastating the Midwest. Floods in a number of counties and states are washing out bridges and roads. PSYCHOPATHS are attacking the our leaders and freedom loving Americans. Don't you think it's time to drop the Anti-America agenda and vote to fund FEMA, DHS, the Coast Guard, TSA, and Secret Service?"

Republican lawmakers are working toward a June 1 deadline to use the reconciliation process to push for funding for DHS and Customs and Border Protection (CBP), which Tuberville has been calling for this month.
