A horrific child sex trafficking ring recently discovered in Bibb County has possible ties to the Sureños Mexican-American gang.

The Department of Homeland Security confirmed to CBS 42 that Andres Trejo-Velazquez is a Sureños‍ gang member. Trejo-Velazquez was arrested for rape and his alleged connection to the child sex trafficking ring.

“That is always a part of an investigation of this nature — looking at the profit that is made and what is done with it,” Homeland Security special agent in charge Steven Schrank told CBS 42. “We also believe (Trejo-Velazquez’s) father was a suspected gang member who ultimately perished in Mexico in 2015 in a clash with a rival cartel or gang.”

According to the outlet, gang tattoos and his discussions with others about his gang affiliation led law enforcement to investigate the connection.

“He’d brag to different people that he was associated with that he was a member of the gang,” Bibb County Sheriff Jody Wade said.

The Sureños, also known as Sur 13, is a transnational criminal street gang that originated in Southern California, with hundreds of cliques operating throughout the United States. The Sureños and their affiliates pay tribute to the Mexican Mafia, and the number "13" is their symbol, signifying "M" in the alphabet for Mexican Mafia.
