According to a report that aired on this week's broadcast of Alabama Political Reporter's "The V," former U.S. Sen. Doug Jones (D-Mountain Brook) will file paperwork to run for governor on the Democratic ticket for the 2026 election.
Host Bill Britt said he expected the paperwork to be filed with the Alabama Secretary of State's office "this coming week."
"[I] got a call from those very, very close to former U.S. Senator Doug Jones," Britt said. "And we can now report with certainty that Doug Jones will file his paperwork with the Secretary of State this coming week to run for Governor of Alabama."
Panelist Josh Moon welcomed the news.
"Listen, I think that is welcome for a lot of folks," Moon said. "You know, I think there are a lot of people who are looking for a viable candidate out there. I think it is great news for the Democratic ticket right now. And I think that is the most important thing I can say. This doesn't mean — Doug is not going to walk in here and automatically be tied statistically with Tommy Tuberville. Tommy Tuberville still has a great edge. Let's don't let anybody get fooled about anything. And, you know, Doug still has, I guess, a primary. Although now I think he is the overwhelming favorite to be the Democratic nominee. We'll see what everybody else in the race does."
"I just think what it does now is it creates a national buzz, it creates a statewide buzz, and it begins to highlight for people, and it puts in front of them Democratic ideas for governance. And the Democratic ideas are the ones that people have liked the most over the last few years. And that is barnone — it is undeniable, especially economic policies among Democrats. It's been undeniable."
