President Donald Trump is set to announce Tuesday from the White House that U.S. Space Command is officially coming to Huntsville. The move follows years of contentious disagreements among lawmakers as to where the headquarters for the command would officially be located.
In January 2021, the Secretary of the Air Force named Redstone Arsenal in Huntsville the top choice for SPACECOM headquarters. The recommendation for the site was also supported by the Inspector General's Office and the GAO. In July 2023, however, then-President Joe Biden ignored the recommendations and kept the command in Colorado Springs, Colo., drawing swift condemnation from Alabama lawmakers.
According to a report from the Associated Press, two individuals with knowledge of the expected announcement confirmed the content of the news. Additionally, a Pentagon website featuring a livestream of Trump's upcoming remarks has been labeled a “U.S. Space Command HQ Announcement.”
White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt issued a short statement regarding the Tuesday update.
“The president will be making an exciting announcement related to the Department of Defense,” Leavitt said.
The announcement is scheduled for 2 p.m. ET in the Oval Office.
