Candidate qualifying is over and the Alabama Republican Party has effectively retained its control of both Houses of the Alabama Legislature for the next four years after Democrats were unable to field candidates in even half of the State Senate and State House of Representatives seats up in 2022.

Democrats fielded candidates in only 14 of the 35 Alabama Senate races, meaning that even if Democrats won every race Republicans would still have a 21-14 super majority. Most of the Democratic candidates qualified for the eight seats they already control. Fifteen state senators (12 Republicans and three Democrats) face no opposition.

Democrats only fielded candidates in 48 Alabama House of Representatives seats out of the 105 in play, assuring Republicans control of the House for the next quadrennium.

Independent and minor party candidates have until May 24 to qualify.
