After 31 years of "The Rick and Bubba Show," cohost Rick Burgess has started his own venture, "The Rick Burgess Show."

Burgess said his new show is about returning to his comedic roots while occasionally discussing the news and politics of the day.

Last Wednesday on "1819 News: The Podcast," Burgess gave a behind-the-scenes look at how he and Bill "Bubba" Bussey parted ways, followed by his view of the current political state of America post-Biden.

"I believe it's almost like we've sobered up as a country, and we've been on some drunk, a party that we thought you could embrace all these ridiculous things that aren't logical and aren't real, and it still be OK. And we realized it's not OK," he said.

Even after just under a week in office, Donald Trump has fulfilled many campaign promises and undone some damage left by the previous administration, but Burgess said there's much more work to be done.

"Our country is in trouble. I always say this, and I'm sure you have: socialism is an easy sale if you never have to live under it," he said. "You know, and then when you finally start realizing things like DEI. How many more companies are you and I going to talk about on our platforms that said, 'Hey, we got pressure to do all this woke stuff. It's destroyed our company.' Well, it's also destroyed our country.

"I think the American people, the majority have had enough of that. Even if they're going to sneak around and keep telling their friends they didn't vote for Donald Trump, they did. Because they know, based on what you just said, no matter how you feel about him, the human being, when he ran this place, it was much better than when his opposition ran this place. And so America said, 'Yeah, I'd like to get back to that and try that again. And what you just said is important, but there must be resolve."

Burgess warned there would be some tough decisions ahead to get the country back on track, something he emphasizes in his men's ministry, Man Church.

"I don't enjoy making difficult decisions. I'm just willing to do them. And America made a difficult decision for some of you. We know, but it had to be done," he said. "...When you're dealing with good and bad and lies and truth, all the opposition sees when you start trying to coddle them is weakness. It doesn't win them over to you at all. Now, I'm not saying you wish harm on anybody. I'm talking about you stick with what you know is true, as you said, and you stomach it no matter how much they scream at you. And speaking from someone who's been screamed at a lot by various groups, when they discover that screaming at you doesn't change anything, and you just keep doubling down on what you know is the truth, they do grow weary of it. And I know it doesn't feel like it when they're screaming at you, but they do, and we have to do this. We have to do what we know is right."
