The City of Montgomery recently celebrated the installation of Alabama's 17th Safe Haven Baby Box at Fire Station 10.
Safe Haven Baby Boxes, founded by Monica Kelsey, have been adding boxes to Alabama since State Rep. Donna Givens (R-Loxley) championed legislation in 2023 to allow mothers to surrender their infants for up to 45 days after birth, no questions asked.
The Montgomery location, at 1920 S. Court Street, will offer mothers a legal and anonymous option to give their babies a chance at a safe future, the city stated.
"The introduction of the box at Fire Station 10 offers a way forward for someone that is overwhelmed and protects the life of a newborn who deserves love, care, and a future," said Mayor Steven Reed.
"We have seen time and time again that preparation can save and change lives," said Kelsey. "We never know when or where we will be needed, so it is crucial to have options for mothers in crisis. I am grateful for local advocates who take our mission to their community."
Surrendered infants are promptly transported to a local hospital for evaluation. The Alabama Department of Human Resources then places the baby for adoption with the assistance of the local Department of Family Services.
