Victimizing those already hurting is the plan for one scammer, Hoover Police warn.

An unknown male is calling people who have posted online about their lost pets and taking advantage of them.

“It is believed that this person is using social media to identify potential victims that have posted about a lost pet,” police explained in a press release. “He explains that they can pay a ‘release fee’ by giving him their credit card information over the telephone. He would then release the pet back to them.”

Police say the man identifies himself as an employee of Hoover Animal Control.

“Please remember this is NOT how legitimate government business is done,” police reminded the public.

Hoover Police ask citizens to never share their personal information when receiving unsolicited calls or emails. Verify the caller by hanging up and calling the agency or organization directly.
