U.S. Sen. Tommy Tuberville (R-Auburn) is not backing down from his support for former president Donald Trump nor his pledge to block Democrat legislative priorities in the wake of Trump's recent felony convictions.
A New York jury returned a guilty verdict on 34 felony counts against Trump last week. Trump was found guilty of falsifying business records related to a non-disclosure agreement with porn star Stormy Daniels.
The verdict immediately drew the ire of Alabama lawmakers and officials, who blasted the decision as political persecution of a presidential candidate by the Biden administration.
None from Alabama has been more in the corner of the former president than Tuberville, who swiftly joined fellow lawmakers in promising to vote against any additional non-security related funding, judicial or political nominees, or legislation that "helps Joe Biden and Democrats advance their mission of tearing the country apart."
On Wednesday, Tuberville doubled down on his critique of the Biden administration, calling the Trump verdict a "joke" while bashing the Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg and presiding judge Juan Merchan.
"This trial was a political witch hunt from the start," Tuberville said. "The fact that the Biden campaign staged a press conference outside the court tells you everything you need to know. Liberal activist Alvin Bragg and Biden donor Judge Merchan had a shared goal: to put President Trump behind bars."
He continued. "This was pure election interference, plain and simple," Tuberville continued. "I'm not going to just stand by while they run our country in the ground. My conservative colleagues and I have pledged to oppose any additional non-security-related funding, all of Biden's judicial and political nominees, and any Democrat bills designed to tear our country apart. If Democrats want to get serious about securing our border and enforcing our laws, I'm ready to hear about it, but I refuse to cooperate with any Democrat legislative priorities designed to take down President Trump or any other candidate from either side. I won't sit by while Democrats tear this country apart."
