The U.S. Senate confirmed Thomas Govan and former State Sen. Phil Williams on Monday as U.S. Attorneys.
Govan and Williams were confirmed by a vote of 46-43 in a nominations package.
Govan most recently worked in the Alabama Attorney General's Office and unsuccessfully ran for the Alabama Court of Criminal Appeals in 2024.
“President Trump made an incredible choice by nominating Thomas Govan to serve as the U.S. Attorney for the Middle District of Alabama. Today, I was proud to vote alongside many of my Senate colleagues and confirm him. His expertise, professionalism, and deep knowledge of the legal system provide him with an incredible foundation on which to serve our great state. I look forward to seeing how his leadership as a U.S. Attorney brings violent criminals to justice, upholds the rule of law, and strengthens public safety for communities across Alabama,” U.S. Sen. Katie Britt (R-Montgomery) said in a statement on Monday.
Williams was the host of "Rightside Radio" and managing member of Williams, Driskill, Huffstutler & King, LLC, a law firm based in Gadsden.
“Today, I joined many of my Senate colleagues in voting to confirm President Trump’s nominee to serve as U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of Alabama, Phil Williams. U.S. Attorneys play a critical role in ensuring the Department of Justice faithfully executes the law, keeps criminals off our streets, and ensures public safety across the country. I’m glad to see two out of three of the President’s U.S. Attorney nominees confirmed to their positions in Alabama, and I know our great state will be stronger and safer as a result,” Britt said.
U.S. Sen. Tommy Tuberville (R-Auburn) called the confirmations a “huge” for the state of Alabama.
