MONTGOMERY — Members of the Alabama Senate unanimously passed legislation on Wednesday giving paid parental leave to state employees and public school teachers.

The bill was sponsored by State Sen. Vivian Figures (D-Mobile) and is supported by Gov. Kay Ivey.

“The mothers will have eight weeks leave, and the fathers will have two weeks leave. It is for women who have a live childbirth, a stillborn child, or a miscarriage,” Figures said on the Senate floor on Wednesday.

The paid parental leave would also apply to state employees and teachers who adopt children aged three years or less.

The bill now goes to the House for their consideration.
