The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency (ALEA) said a fake threat led to the lockdown of the Alabama State University (ASU) campus on Thursday.

ALEA assisted campus police, other local law enforcement and federal law enforcement, but no credible threat was found.

State investigators said universities nationwide were targets of similar swatting emails.

"ALEA reminds the public that swatting is a serious crime which can place lives in danger, strain emergency resources, and will be investigated and prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law," ALEA stated.

ASU president Dr. Quinton T. Ross, Jr. said, "Gratitude doesn’t begin to cover how I feel about the care and courage shown across our campus."

ALEA did not release details about what the emails threatened.
