President Donald J. Trump's announcement made earlier this week that U.S. Space Command will be permanently headquartered in Huntsville is more than a long-awaited victory for our state — it is a historic correction to a national security decision that had been heavily politicized and a strong affirmation that America's defense infrastructure must be guided by strategy, not politics.

While many are rightly celebrating this moment, most missed one of its most significant elements, which was the unified support of Alabama's entire congressional delegation—Republican and Democrat alike. In a time when political division dominates headlines and even affects many relationships, it is worth noting that Alabama's leaders put partisanship aside and stood united behind what is best for our state and our national defense.

A Decision Based On Merit—Finally Realized

Redstone Arsenal in Huntsville was initially selected as the best site for U.S. Space Command through a comprehensive, merit-based process that considered strategic positioning, cost efficiency, infrastructure and military readiness. Despite this, the Biden administration chose to override the process for purely political reasons, placing national security in the shadow of partisanship and wrongly rewarding a blue state over a red one.

That wrong has now been righted. The decision to place Space Command in Huntsville reflects the original, independent finding that Alabama was, and is, the best place for this critical mission.

As vice chair of the House Military and Veterans Affairs Committee, I know firsthand the depth of Alabama's military tradition, our commitment to service members and veterans and the unmatched resources our state offers to the Department of Defense. This is not just a win for Huntsville—it's a win for every American who values a strong, well-positioned national defense.

A Rare and Powerful Moment of Bipartisanship

The presence and advocacy of Alabama's Republican congressional delegation at the White House—Senator Tommy Tuberville, Senator Katie Britt, Congressman Dale Strong, Congressman Mike Rogers, Congressman Robert Aderholt, Congressman Barry Moore and Congressman Gary Palmer—was vital in ensuring this outcome.

But just as noteworthy were the public statements of celebration and support from Alabama's Democratic congressional members, Shomari Figures and Terri Sewell, who added their voices to this unified front. In today's divided political environment, it's rare to see such consensus—but on this issue, Alabama's leaders rose above politics and stood together for the good of our state and country.

That unity speaks volumes.

Looking Ahead

This is a proud moment for Alabama, but also a sobering reminder that when politics interfere with defense strategy, the consequences can impact the security of the entire nation and the allies who stand alongside us. Let this decision serve as a model for how we must conduct ourselves moving forward—facts first, defense first, country first.

Congratulations to the people of Alabama, to our men and women in uniform, and to every leader who stood firm in advocating for what is right. This victory belongs to all of us—but most importantly, it strengthens the safety and readiness of the United States.

Congratulations, Alabama. Congratulations, America.
