During an appearance on Huntsville radio WVNN's "The Dale Jackson Show," State Sen. Sam Givhan (R-Huntsville) suggested the improvements to Alabama's 66-mile portion of Interstate 10, primarily the construction of the Mobile River Bridge and Bayway project, should be the responsibility of the federal government and not the State of Alabama.
While discussing the influx of COVID-response federal money and how it was spent, host Dale Jackson speculated a potential goal of those funds was to create government dependency. He referenced U.S. Sen. Katie Britt's (R-Montgomery) effort to steer federal infrastructure money to the I-10 project despite the state's elected federal delegation mostly not backing the spending bill that made those funds available.
Givhan questioned I-10 as a burden for Alabamians, given who travels it to and through Alabama.
"[Y]ou know, that I would argue that I-10 is a classic example of true interstate," he said. "I mean, people going from Florida to Mississippi and Louisiana. I mean, just think about all those people from Louisiana coming to our beaches and Florida beaches They're going down I-10. And why should Alabamians have to pay the toll for it?"
