For some, Gov. Kay Ivey's crusade to revamp the governance of the Alabama Department of Veterans Affairs (ADVA) has been a trying episode.

The legislation that would put the ADVA commissioner under the governor's control passed the Senate last week by a 21-9 margin. It shifts the ADVA commissioner's hiring and firing responsibility to the governor.

Currently, the role answers to the State Board of Veterans Affairs (SBVA), which would become an advisory board under the Ivey-backed measure.

The saga has been a hot-button issue of the 2025 legislative session and was linked to the cancellation of an Alabama Federation of Republican Women event last week.

The bill's Senate sponsor, State Sen. Andrew Jones (R-Centre), has taken the brunt of online criticism from opponents of the legislation.

However, he is taking the fight back against critics in a video posted to Facebook. The video produced by "Leading Alabama" features Jones and senate colleagues State Sens. Greg Albritton (R-Range), Josh Carnley (R-Enterprise), David Sessions (R-Grand Bay) and Randy Price (R-Opelika).

According to Facebook's required disclaimer, Jones is spending between $700-799 on the targeted spot, which will achieve 40,000-45,000 impressions and an audience of 5,000-10,000.
