The Alabama Senate on Friday announced the appointment of State Sen. Lance Bell (R-Pell City) as chair of the Fiscal Responsibility and Economic Development Committee and other committee assignments.

Bell will assume the role previously held by State Sen. Pro-Tem. Garlan Gudger (R-Cullman) following Gudger’s election to the leadership position earlier this week. Bell, an attorney, represents Shelby, St. Clair and Talladega Counties.

“The name of this committee contains two phrases—‘fiscal responsibility’ and ‘economic development’—that are essential to the continuing economic health and growth of Alabama,” Bell said. “The bills and measures that come before us will be thoroughly vetted and carefully considered as we work to create even brighter days ahead for all Alabamians.”

In addition to Bell’s appointment, the Committee on Assignments assigned the following senators to Senate committees:

  • State Sen. Keith Kelley (R-Anniston) – Finance and Taxation Education Committee

  • State Sen. Josh Carnley (R-Ino) – Confirmations

  • State Sen. Wes Kitchens (R-Arab) – Education Policy Committee

  • State Sen. Jay Hovey (R-Auburn)  – Tourism Committee

Each appointment fills a vacancy following Gudger’s transition to pro-tem, a position that does not hold committee assignments.

The newly appointed members will serve on these committees for the remainder of the 2023-2026 quadrennium.

“The Alabama Senate is made up of some of the most capable leaders, each bringing valuable experience and talent to the table,” Gudger said. “These Senators are stepping up to move legislation that upholds Alabama values, protects our families, and makes our communities safer.”
