FAIRHOPE — While the southern part of Alabama was spared the destruction brought by the severe weather that made its way through the state on Saturday, there was still some damage.

On Baldwin County's Eastern Shore just north of downtown Fairhope, Section Street, part of Scenic Route 98, was washed out, forcing traffic to be rerouted and headed south into downtown.

The City of Fairhope posted a note to its Facebook page and announced an emergency city council meeting has been called to deal with the matter.

"Section Street near Bayou is currently closed, along with the sidewalk, until further notice. We anticipate holding an emergency City Council meeting tomorrow; the exact time will be announced soon. The meeting will focus on developing a repair plan. We kindly ask residents to avoid this area if possible for their safety.

Since Friday evening, we have recorded approximately 9 inches of rain near downtown. City crews have been actively working overnight to address flooding, monitor lift stations, and respond to power outages.

Crews are currently assessing the area for any additional damage. We encourage residents to report any issues they observe throughout the day. Our teams are on standby and prepared to respond as needed."
