Tallapoosa County District Attorney Mike Segrest said he asked the Alabama Attorney General’s Office to take over the investigation and prosecution of a capital murder case.

A 22-year-old man was shot and killed Saturday in the 4000 block of Washington Street in Alexander City.

Toyias Gopher, 32, was identified as the victim.

The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency was called in to investigate.

“The District Attorney’s office has been fire-walled from this investigation from the very beginning and does not have any information related to the investigation,” Segrest stated.

Segrest released a statement saying his office stepped away from the case because one of its employees has a conflict of interest.

The suspect, Steven Abercrombie, 22, was arrested and charged with capital murder.

Abercrombie was being held in the Tallapoosa County Jail with no bond.

The Alexander City Police Department, the Montgomery Police Department, the Tallapoosa County Sheriff’s Office, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives Montgomery Office assisted.
