Tarrant Mayor Wayman Newton will propose a credit to Tarrant Electric customers Monday after he found the company has a $4 million surplus.
"While my direct authority over Tarrant Electric was removed three years ago, my commitment to finding ways to ease financial burdens for our community has never wavered," Newton posted. "I'm bringing this proposal to the City Council to make sure you get the relief you deserve."
Newton said some in the city claim the Tarrant Electric Department does not have the funds to afford the credit; he counterclaimed, saying the department only funds their priorities.
"So, if the money is there, why isn't it being used to help the people who need it most—you, the residents of Tarrant?" Newton asked. "The council's refusal to support this credit isn't about the budget; it's about their priorities which doesn't include you!"
The credit would cost the department around $200,000.
The Tarrant Electric Department is a partner of the Tennessee Valley Authority and serves approximately 2,700 businesses and residential customers.
The Tarrant City Council will meet November 18 at 7 p.m. Newton asked citizens to show up in support of the proposal.
