A former tennis coach in Dale County was sentenced to 25 years in prison in a federal child sex case.

Leroy Thomas Joyner, Jr., 51, was convicted in January for transporting a minor across state lines with intent to engage in sexual activity. Prosecutors said Joyner had a business that offered tennis lessons to underprivileged children and teens.

In September 2018, he was investigated for physical abuse of a 15-year-old female student. The investigation revealed he was in a sexual relationship with the child and had been since she was 13.

During the trial, testimony revealed Joyner had sex with the child in multiple states, including Georgia, Louisiana and South Carolina.

When Joyner completes his 25 years in federal prison, he will be placed on supervised release for life.

“This significant sentence reflects the harm that Joyner inflicted upon his young and vulnerable victim,” said U.S. Attorney Jonathan S. Ross. “I am grateful for the courage shown by the victim in coming forward and the diligence of the investigating agencies. Through the actions of all involved, a predator is off of the street and our communities are safer.”

Federal inmates are not eligible for parole.

Restitution to Joyner’s victim will be determined at a later date.
