Montgomery Public Schools (MPS) superintendent Melvin J. Brown apologized Tuesday evening for the racially charged and inflammatory language used by keynote speaker Michael Eric Dyson during the school's annual convocation.

MPS held the ceremony Tuesday at Alabama State University to kick off the upcoming school year.

What was intended to be a motivational time of excitement and anticipation turned sour for many in attendance after the keynote speaker went on a vulgar tirade that left many feeling uncomfortable.

Dyson is an African-American author, professor and commentator known for his controversial opinions on race in America.

A recorded partial segment of Dyson’s keynote speech shows him using the N-word and other crass language. The video was provided by an attendee who wished to remain anonymous.

“I get mail all the time, hate mail from white brothers and sisters calling me n*****,” Dyson said. “I say, ‘that’s Dr. N***** to you.”

Although Dyson’s remarks garnered some applause and laughter, many expressed displeasure at his remarks in the video and others that were not recorded. One poster on social media claimed Dyson also referenced former President Donald Trump, abortion and made disparaging remarks about white people.

The complaints appeared to reach the MPS superintendent, who promptly sent an email offering an apology for Dyson’s speech.

Dear MPS, I hope this message finds you well. I'm reaching out to apologize for the language used today at our convocation by Dr. Michael Eric Dyson. Our goal at convocation is to celebrate the upcoming academic year and provide motivational messaging that will support all employees of our great school.

Our commitment to fostering a supportive and respectful atmosphere is paramount, and I apologize for any discomfort or distress caused by this situation. I hope you enjoyed the convocation and will return to your classrooms and offices motivated to kick off the new year. I want to thank you for your continued support and for being an integral part of our school community. Your role is crucial in our mission to ensure there's always more with MPS.

Others on social media expressed support for Dyson's remarks, claiming those white individuals in the audience should welcome discomfort as a form of growth.
