As former President Donald Trump arrived in New York City on Monday for the alleged hush money trial concerning porn star Stormy Daniels, U.S. Sen. Katie Britt (R-Montgomery) spoke to Fox News Channel's "Fox & Friends" to share her thoughts on the criminal charges brought against Trump.

"This is the left continuing to meltdown over Donald Trump," Britt told host Lawrence Jones. "They are obsessed."

Britt said along with the left, the media have been focused on discrediting Trump ahead of the 2024 presidential election instead of reporting on important matters.

"I think the more the media can talk about this, which we're going to see them do, then the less they have to talk about what a disaster this country is under Joe Biden," she said. "They know people want Trump back in the White House, and they absolutely cannot stand it."

Britt said those disasters include the border crisis, foreign affairs and following the money here at home.

She said the trial is distracting Trump from the campaign trail, which is where he needs to be.

"We need Donald Trump out there and giving that message and bringing people in and they know that when that happens, he's going to win in November and they absolutely cannot stand it," she continued.

The senator said she believes the trial needs to be made public but believes Democrats do not want the truth to be revealed.

Trump is the first former U.S. president to stand trial on criminal charges. The trial is expected to last at least six weeks, and testimony may not begin until next week, as jury selection will be challenging.
