President Donald Trump has nominated Mobile native Wells Griffith for two ambassador roles.

Trump nominated Griffith on Monday to be representative of the United States of America to the Vienna Office of the United Nations, with the rank of ambassador.

He also nominated Griffith to be representative of the United States of America to the International Atomic Energy Agency, with the rank of ambassador.

Both nominations were sent to the Senate for its consideration.

Griffith has been active in GOP politics for decades. After graduating from law school, he worked on several Republican campaigns in Mississippi, later becoming executive director of the Mississippi Republican Party in 2009.

Griffith also ran for Alabama's First Congressional District seat in 2013 but was defeated in the Republican primary.

He joined the Trump administration in 2017 as a senior White House adviser for the Department of Energy and then became principal deputy assistant secretary in the department's Office of International Affairs.

Griffith rejoined the Trump administration as the Under Secretary of Energy at the U.S. Department of Energy in January 2025. However, he was “sidelined” and on paid time off by October 2025, according to POLITICO.
