Despite questions about how violating a 2014 term limit pledge would impact his reelection bid, U.S. Rep. Gary Palmer (R-Hoover) is showing signs of strength heading down the stretch run of the 2024 Republican primary.

On Saturday, the Jefferson County Republican Party held its presidential straw poll at the Gardendale Civic Center, which also included down-ballot contests offered to Republican primary voters in Jefferson County. For the $15 admission fee, attendees received a ballot and breakfast.

Once the final tally was in, Palmer earned 57% of the vote, followed by Gerrick Wilkins at 29% and Ken McFeeters at 14%.

Former President Donald Trump also dominated the presidential balloting, earning 71% of the vote, followed by Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (19%), former South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley and Vivek Ramaswamy (both at 5%), and former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie (1%).

Among the other highlights included former State Sen. Bryan Taylor earning 66% of the vote over Alabama Supreme Court Justice Sarah Stewart at 34% in the race for Alabama Supreme Court Chief Justice.
