U.S. Sen. Tommy Tuberville (R-Auburn) continues to sound the alarm on the crisis at the U.S. southern border, claiming the Democrats' seemingly new concern for border security is merely a tactic to boost their chances of winning in the upcoming 2024 election.
Democratic lawmakers have recently taken an unprecedented interest in addressing the continual influx of illegal immigrants at the border. Many on the left are publicly courting solutions that, years ago, would have been complete non-starters for Democrats.
The increase in Democratic support could be due to the actions of Texas Gov. Greg Abbott (R), who has continually bussed migrants to so-called “sanctuary cities” run by Democrats.
On a Wednesday press call, Tuberville said the Senate was already negotiating border wall policies. However, he emphatically claimed that recent Democratic interest in securing the border was merely an election-year ploy to maintain power in the White House while still attempting to use the border as a bargaining chip to continue funding the war in Ukraine.
“The Senate is in the middle of negotiations on the border, and Democrats are holding America hostage,” Tuberville said. “I want you to think about this: they say they won't fix our border, and they’re admitting this, they won’t fix our border unless they get $100 billion for Ukraine. That’s insane. That’s extortion. Democrats just spent three years destroying our border and ruining our immigration system. They keep saying that our border’s fixed. Well, it’s not, and it’s not closed.”
“Now it’s an election year, and they’re very busy looking and wanting to do something at the border a little too late," he continued. "…Joe Biden is auctioning off border wall parts for just pennies on the dollar. I want you to think about this now, your hard-earned dollars were spent by President Trump to build a wall. And I know people that are spending ten cents on the dollar buying that border wall. [Biden] is also suing Texas to get them to stop building the wall. So they’re really not fired up about stopping people coming across the border; they just want to act like it because it is an election year.”
Pointing to the massive amount of drugs and criminals crossing the border, Tuberville referred to the border situation as “one of the worst crises in our country’s history.” He also stressed that new laws would not help the problem. Instead, he said the Biden administration should prioritize the enforcement of the laws currently in place.
“Right now, we’ve got plenty of laws on the books that could secure the border,” Tuberville said. “President Trump did it. We were down to 500 [border encounters] a week at times with President Trump; now we’re over 10,000 a day. We can pass new laws, but they’re not going to go by them anyway. Just enforce the ones we have.”
