U.S. Sen. Tommy Tuberville (R-Auburn) is hopeful he can sit down with President Donald Trump and former University of Alabama coach Nick Saban during the President's visit for his commencement address to discuss name, image and likeness (NIL) reform.
During a Wednesday appearance on Tide 100.9's "The Game with Ryan Fowler," Tuberville noted that Trump "wants to help." Alabama's senior U.S. Senator warned that college athletics are currently in a "tailspin."
“Hopefully, we'll get to sit down with Coach Saban," Tuberville said. "President Trump wants to help on this NIL."
“I don’t know how he can do it through an executive order, but possibly we can sit down and talk some insights of what Coach Saban thinks about it, what I think about it, and we can come up with some kind of agreement, because right now, it’s in a tailspin.”
Tuberville went on to say there needed to be some reform regarding the transfer portal and contracts, adding there needed to be uniform rules across the country to make "college sports the greatest sports ever" again. He also suggested there could be trickle down effects to non-revenue sports, mostly women's sports.
"If we continue this path, there’s not going to be any money left," he warned.
"[W]e’re going in the wrong direction — again, that’s one reason President Trump wants to address this. He understands the significance of what’s happening, and if we don’t do something soon, we will lose a lot of the non-revenue sports, and most of that includes women’s sports," Tuberville concluded.
Saban left Alabama's head coaching gig abruptly in January 2024. He later cited the landscape of college football with NIL, the transfer portal and other aspects for retiring.
Trump is set to speak at Coleman Coliseum at 6:30 p.m. He will be joined by Saban and UA president Stuart Bell.
