U.S. Sen. Tommy Tuberville (R-Auburn) introduced legislation to stop the "unjust double tax" on Social Security benefits this week.

The bill, called the Senior Citizens Tax Elimination Act, would deliver on one of President Donald Trump's campaign promises and leave more money for senior citizens.

Tuberville said it was a "shame for Congress to use our seniors as a way to get more money for the federal government."

"This is to stop the unjust double tax on Social Security benefits to our seniors," Alabama's senior U.S. Senator said on a Thursday call with reporters. "Before 1984, Social Security benefits were exempt from being taxed, but as per usual, the federal government got involved and ruined it. our seniors have already paid their share of taxes on social security through years of payroll taxes out of their hard-earned paychecks."

He continued, "It is a shame for Congress to use our seniors as a way to get more money for the federal government. They already live on a super tight budget, and this additional income would be a huge help."

Per Breitbart, the bill "would amend the Internal Revenue Code of 1986 to terminate the inclusion of tier I railroad retirement benefits and Social Security benefits in an individual’s gross income."
