The "Tommy Tuberville for Governor" discussion gained steam last week after a Punchbowl News report revealed Alabama's senior U.S. Senator was telling colleagues and associates he wanted to run for governor in 2026 instead of seeking another term in the Senate.
During an interview with Mobile radio FM Talk 106.5 on Tuesday, Tuberville did not rule out a run and said he was weighing his options to "do what's best for the people in our state."
"I haven't had a lot of time to even think about it, other than the fact a lot of people are calling both ways," he said. "Here's what I tell people: I want to do what's best for the people in our state. I'm not doing it for me or anything other than I want to give back. And I told you this — this is my service to the country, and whichever way it takes me, I'll work with my family, I'll work with people up here. I'll talk with the President. I'll talk with people back home, the leaders back home. I want to do what's best. Obviously, I'm not the answer to everything, but I am a fighter. And again, if my calling is to run for governor, I'll do that. If my calling is to stay here, I'll do that. But again, it's not just me making that decision. Other people will be involved in that and hopefully we make this right decision. Again, it all has to do with how can I help the state of Alabama more. That's what this is all about. One way or another, we'll make a decision here in the short future and get one with life."
