During an interview with News Nation's "On Balance" live from the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee, Wis., U.S. Sen. Tommy Tuberville (R-Auburn) sounded off about the briefing with U.S. Secret Service director Kimberly Cheatle regarding the attempted assassination.
Tuberville told News Nation's Leland Vittert that "the American people need to know what went on" that almost resulted in the former president and presumptive 2024 GOP presidential nominee getting killed. He also urged the Secret Service to "take responsibility" for the shooting at the Trump rally.
"[W]e found out today in the talk with the director of the Secret Service, Christopher Wray, the director of the FBI, that they pretty much knew 30 minutes before Trump came out on stage that there was a breach, and he still came out. They still let him come out," Tuberville outlined. Something went terribly wrong here."
The Alabama senator said Cheatle described the assassination attempt as a failure on the Secret Service's part.
"Wait a minute," Tuberville said. "Your job as Secret Service director is to make sure that nobody breaches anything to where anybody puts a finger on a trigger and pulls it. Once that trigger was pulled, no matter whether anybody was killed or not, she lost. The Secret Service failed."
"They're understaffed, and they didn't have enough people there that day. It's obvious," he added. "Just come out and say it. Somebody take responsibility. Nobody in D.C. wants to take responsibility for anything."
