MILWAUKEE, Wis. — The Republican National Convention kicked off on Monday, and U.S. Sen. Tommy Tuberville (R-Auburn) was on hand to address the Alabama Republican Party.

Tuberville touched on the attempted assassination of former President Donald Trump, who is expected to be officially nominated as the GOP's 2024 presidential nominee this week, and the importance of Trump's vice presidential pick.

Alabama's senior U.S. Senator said he had spoken with Trump, who was "still shook" from the shooting. He added that the "fearless" presumptive GOP presidential nominee won't let his near assassination stop him.

"We're very fortunate," Tuberville said of Trump surviving the shooting. "I talked to [Trump] this morning; he's still shook. And he ought to be. I want you to think about this: somebody shoots a gun at your head, and it comes within millimeters of taking your life. We wouldn't be here today if he hadn't turned his head to the right. It took off the top part of his ear. He asked me, 'You think I ought to wear a bandage?' I said, 'Hell yeah, wear that bandage for the first part of the week, and then Thursday when you accept the nomination, you look like normal, tough Donald J. Trump.' But it was a tough time. And we just don't realize how close we were to having to not be here this week."

"I promise you one thing: he ain't stopping," he later added after lamenting the "huge mental health problem" in the United States. "There's nobody going to tell him to stop. I feel that, and I've been to a lot of these rallies with him, and I mean, he is fearless, but he knows he's doing it for the right reason."

Tuberville went on to lead a prayer for Trump, the other shooting victims and the country itself.
