After much speculation and attempted mudslinging over perceived residency questions, U.S. Sen. Tommy Tuberville (R-Auburn) announced on Wednesday that he would make an official announcement on his rumored run for governor at the end of May.

Rumors of Tuberville’s gubernatorial run have circulated the political scene for months. The scuttlebutt has generally been that the senator plans to leave Washington, D.C., behind to take on the state’s highest-ranking executive position.

Since the rumors became more prevalent, old attempts to raise doubts over Tuberville’s residency have kicked into overdrive, with left-wing media trying to cast a shadow over a potential gubernatorial run by claiming he, in fact, lives in Florida.

In response to the speculation, Tuberville has consistently stated that he and his wife were praying over the next step, giving no indication one way or another. Tuberville has always found himself at odds with Democrats in Congress, spending most of his tenure in the minority party. However, with the election of Donald Trump, combined with the Senate gaining a GOP majority, the frustrations that might have pushed Tuberville to seek a different office have been somewhat lessened.

Finally, after months of speculation, Tuberville told reporters on Wednesday that he would make an official announcement at the end of May about whether he will pursue reelection in the U.S. Senate or run for governor of his home state.

“We will announce something at the end of May,” Tuberville said. “Suzanne and I have been talking about this, praying about it. You know, the past few months with President Trump back in the White House have been a breath of fresh air. I am 100% committed to serving the great people of Alabama no matter what, whether it’s up here in D.C. or whether it’s in Montgomery. We’ll have something announced very soon. Whether I’m Senator or Governor, Alabamians still know me as Coach. And I’m looking forward to building here or building in Montgomery."
