During an appearance on "The Lou Holtz Show" podcast, U.S. Sen. Tommy Tuberville (R-Auburn) praised former President Donald Trump and said the GOP presidential nominee was "the only person" who could lead this country back "in the right direction."

Tuberville responded to the disdain for Trump by saying they just don't understand him. He argued that Trump's leadership would "get us back to the way this country needs to be."

"I'm around him a lot. I play golf with him; I know you've played with him [and] you're around him. I think a lot of people don't understand him," Tuberville told host Lou Holtz. "Number one, he's a Yankee from New York. ... He helped build the city of New York, the number one city in the country of the United States of America, and look what they're doing to him now."

"[P]resident Trump is a guy that is going to speak his peace. He's going to tell you what he thinks, but he's got leadership, Coach," he continued. "You know as well as I do because we've been in sports, if you have to run some organization, somebody's got to be at the top, and he's got to tell you the truth all the time and tell you how it is and then tell you how to fix that problem. We don't have that here right now in Washington, D.C. We don't have the leadership. It's kind of a leadership by a group of people up here."

"Coach Holtz, President Trump is to me right now, in our situation, the only person that can take this big football team we've got and lead it and get us back to the way this country needs to be and lead it in the right direction," Tuberville added.
