U.S. Sen. Tommy Tuberville (R-Auburn) railed against diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) policies on Wednesday, saying "we have to wash our hands of it."

In response to being called to retract his remarks describing DEI as "nonsense of social justice," Tuberville, who recently proposed legislation that would codify President Donald Trump's executive orders to eliminate DEI programs into law, doubled down and said DEI needed to be eliminated because it was dividing the country.

"We have to get rid of DEI," Tuberville declared in a call with reporters. "We have got to wash our hands of it because it is dividing our country, and we can't continue for that to happen. Joe Biden and Kamala Harris nearly destroyed the fabric of our country with this woke, racist ideology. We need to hire based on merit, not skin color, but merit. Thank God President Trump is restoring merit-based hiring practice back to our government."

"We have to make sure that a future administration can't implement these same racist, poisonous policies that the Biden administration got away with. It was a disaster. President Trump's going to clean it up, and I'm so glad to be on the team with him," he added.
