Of the seven city council seats in Hoover, five have been set, while two races are going to a runoff. Four incumbents will return. Two, Steve McClinton and Casey Middlebrooks, did not have opposition, while Kristi Driver and Derrick Murphy easily fended off their opposition.

The most successful candidate facing opposition this cycle, according to election results, wasn't an incumbent. The Hoover Channel's Robin Schultz, who ran for Place 1, got 10,819 votes.

Two seats remain, with Place 2 being vacated by Sam Swiney, pitting Kenneth Cox against Gene Smith. Cox is touting his experience as a coach and leader within the Leadership Hoover program, while Smith is offering to bring decades of institutional knowledge and leadership back to the council.

In Place 3, candidates Liz Lane and Ashley Lovell are both vying to bring their unique perspectives to the board. Lovell almost won the election outright, getting 8,155 votes, but came just shy of avoiding a runoff. Lane got 4,696 votes, and Robert Williams received 3,508 votes.

Lane, a fashion major, is an accomplished artist who has focused her campaign on encouraging the City to adopt green initiatives. Lovell, who holds a degree in biology and a minor in business, is best known for her leadership and organizational skills, particularly coordinating community opposition to plans in the Tattersall neighborhood.

Both women actively support funding the arts in Hoover.
