The FBI raid on former President Donald Trump's Mar-a-Lago home in Palm Beach, Fla. has been criticized as an unprecedented overreach by the current Biden administration.

While history is still sorting out what the long-term implications of that raid are for the country, U.S. Rep. Robert Aderholt (R-Haleyville) said politically, it has been a net positive for Republicans.

During an interview with Mobile radio FM Talk 106.5's "The Jeff Poor Show," Aderholt said the raid staged by the Biden Justice Department would be seen as a "favor" for the GOP.

"Well, I think the FBI raid at Mar-a-Lago — that was one thing that has energized, I think, the Republicans and especially the Trump supporters," Aderholt said. "And, of course, we've seen Trump's numbers go up increasingly since the raid at Mar-a-Lago. They didn't know it, but I think Merrick Garland and the Democrats and the administration really did the Republicans a favor by doing the raid in the sense that it is energizing the base."

Aderholt's fourth congressional district was Trump's best congressional district in the country in the 2016 and 2020 presidential elections. Trump earned more than 80% of the total vote in both contests.

According to Aderholt, the Mar-a-Lago raid has reinvigorated that support.

"There are folks I see who are not only wearing 'Trump' T-shirts and 'Trump' hats but now it is Trump 2024," Aderholt added. "I'll be honest with — again, since the raid on Mar-a-Lago, there have been people who tell me they had sort of much moved on from Trump. But after Mar-a-Lago, they're pulling out their Trump stuff again."
