Nearly 250 years ago, a group of ordinary men did something the world had never seen before. They declared a revolutionary truth – that our rights come not from government, but from Almighty God.

Those words in the Declaration of Independence launched an experiment in self-government unlike any the world had ever known. The founders understood the cost of freedom. They pledged their lives, their fortunes, and their sacred honor, knowing they could lose everything.

Yet, they believed liberty was worth the sacrifice.

George Washington later reminded Americans that "the preservation of the sacred fire of liberty ... [is] finally staked … on the experiment entrusted to the hands of the American people."

His words remain as true today as they were in 1789.

American exceptionalism has never been about claiming perfection. It is about recognizing that America was founded on enduring truths that every person is created equal, that our rights come from our Creator, and that government's first duty is to protect those God-given rights. Those principles have inspired generations to build businesses, raise families, worship freely, and pursue the American Dream.

For 250 years, courageous Americans have upheld these ideals through service, sacrifice, and hard work. Soldiers have defended our freedom on distant battlefields. Farmers have sustained our nation by feeding its people. Laborers have built the industries that drive our economy and strengthen our future. Here in Alabama, our communities have proudly answered every call to serve, proving that faith, hard work, and love of country remain the backbone of this great nation.

Benjamin Franklin famously warned that America was "a republic, if you can keep it." That responsibility now belongs to us.

The next 250 years will not be determined by government alone. They will be shaped by parents who teach their children to love this country, churches that proclaim the truth, communities that strengthen families, and citizens who refuse to take freedom for granted.

As we celebrate America's 250th birthday, let us honor those who secured our liberty by preserving the principles they entrusted to us. If we remain faithful to our Constitution, defend our God-given freedoms, and place our trust in the same Providence that guided our founders, I believe America's greatest days are still ahead.

The first 250 years proved what a free people can accomplish. The next 250 are ours to write.
