U.S. Sens. Katie Britt (R-Montgomery) and Tommy Tuberville (R-Auburn) recently voted in favor of U.S. Sen. Rand Paul's (R-Ky.) joint resolution of disapproval to block President Joe Biden's attempt to cancel half of Ukraine's debt to the United States. However, the vote ultimately failed in the Senate.
The Biden-Harris Administration has taken several unilateral steps related to the ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine in recent days.
After receiving approval from the Biden administration days before, Ukraine fired American-made ATACMS missiles into Russia on Tuesday, hitting a weapons arsenal. The administration announced Wednesday that it would also give Ukraine anti-personnel mines to deter further Russian advances and cancel half of Ukraine's debt to the U.S., totaling nearly $4.6 billion.
Americans all across the United States are grappling with high prices and their own debt thanks to four years of the Biden-Harris Administration, all while the U.S. national debt has hit a record $36 trillion, and we cannot afford a $4.65 billion dollar gift to Ukraine. In response, Paul filed Senate Joint Resolution 117, universally condemning Biden's efforts in both the Senate and House of Representatives. This week, both Tuberville and Britt voted in favor of the resolution. However, it failed in the Senate with a final vote of 37-61.
After the vote, Britt released a statement slamming Biden's attempts to "redistribute" the debt to the American people, claiming the incoming Trump administration would be better equipped to deal with the conflict.
"President Biden's irresponsible, lame-duck scheme to redistribute Ukraine's debt onto hardworking Americans continues the America Last failures of this administration," Britt said. "Ukraine borrowed it, they should pay it back in cash or mineral rights—no matter how long it takes. With the U.S. national debt surpassing $36 trillion, the last thing American taxpayers deserve is having foreign debt dumped on them by the unilateral decree of an outgoing President with basement-low approval numbers. I was proud to join Senator Rand Paul in standing up for American families and fighting back against this latest Biden boondoggle. I'll continue working to restore fiscal sanity to Washington, D.C., and I look forward to President Trump retaking the White House with a peace-through-strength doctrine that will once again prioritize Americans first."
