As the war in Ukraine rages on into its second year since Russian ground forces invaded, U.S. Sen. Tommy Tuberville (R-Auburn) is calling for a diplomatic approach to put an end to hostilities.
After receiving heavy criticism for suggesting the U.S. and Ukraine should be open to negotiating with Russian President Vladimir Putin, the former Auburn football coach doubled down Monday during an appearance on Fox Business's "Kudlow."
"Diplomacy, Larry. They have no clue up here [in Washington] about that," Tuberville said. "We need to get this over with for the American people and the Ukrainians and the Russians. This needs to be over, but nobody wants to talk about it."
Tuberville said a Russian victory was inevitable; however, the war hawks in D.C. may be too pot-committed to see a way out.
"Ukraine can't win. Now the people now in Washington D.C., after we've already given them $120 billion, Larry, they don't know how to get out of this," Tuberville said. "So what do we do? We're going to double down. We're going to send them $60 billion more dollars of the taxpayers' money — by the way, that we don't have — and it's not going to make any difference for six or seven months, even if it were to pass the House, which I don't think it will."
While the U.S. sends billions to Ukraine, America's NATO allies aren't paying their fair share, Tuberville said.
"They know better. NATO is supposed to have 2% of their GPD. President Trump went over there in about what, 2017, and said, 'Listen, you're either going to pay up or we're out. You're going to have to pay your fair share.' We're paying almost everything."
He added, "Vladimir Putin wants out of this. You heard that on Tucker Carlson. Diplomacy, what happened to diplomacy?"
