Residents near the Moody Landfill are again concerned after an underground fire that has been burning for nearly a year has started releasing smoke into the air.

A drone operator took a video of the seeping smoke this week.

Residents in the area suffered from air quality issues for months, and some were forced to leave their homes.

The fire likely started in December 2022, and the Alabama Department of Emergency Management (ADEM) received complaints starting in January 2023. However, ADEM could not neutralize the fire due to a lack of resources. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) was called in and neutralized the fire for some time.

However, the fire was never put out completely, and the smoke again began to seep out of an area. The EPA has been called back to the scene.
