It’s not quite a Valentine’s moon, but it will still be close to full and quite bright on Friday for Valentine’s evening. The actual full moon this month is on Wednesday, two days before Valentine’s.

To add a bit of love into the phenom, Alabama stargazers can also see the planet Venus on Wednesday. Named for the Roman goddess of love, Venus is already visible in Alabama’s west-southwest sky and will continue at peak brightness throughout February.

The February full moon is called the “snow moon” but only because the month of February averages more snow than any other month. Here in Alabama, that looks like it will not be the case, as snowfall records were just set in January.

Peak illumination of the Feb. 12 full moon will be at 8:53 a.m. However, that will not be viewable, as the sun will be up. The best viewing will be on Tuesday or Wednesday night.

When the moon hits your eye like a big pizza pie, that’s amore’.
