According to Alabama Public Library Service (APLS) Board chairman John Wahl, Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) cuts to library federal grants have not affected Alabama libraries so far.
CBS News reported that DOGE recently began cutting federal Institute of Museum and Library Service grants to California, Connecticut and Washington. DOGE also placed most of the institute's staff that handles the grants to states on administrative leave.
Wahl told 1819 News that Alabama hadn't received any notices about Institute of Museum and Library Service grants being cut, "but we're not sure for fiscal year 2026."
Wahl said Alabama libraries receive about $3 million annually from the institute.
"It would be a pretty serious hit," Wahl said about the possibility of losing Institute of Museum and Library Service funding.
