John Wahl, outgoing chairman of the Alabama Republican Party, formally announced his campaign for lieutenant governor following President Donald Trump’s endorsement.

Wahl served as chairman of the Alabama Republican Party since 2021. He resigned as chairman on Friday after qualifying to run for lieutenant governor.

“President Trump understands that Alabama needs a Lieutenant Governor who will fight unapologetically for the America First agenda — and that’s why he endorsed me,” Wahl said. “Alabama can lead the nation in a conservative resurgence to protect our rights, our freedoms, and our values. Now more than ever, we need bold conservative leaders who will stand firmly on our platform, reject weak and lukewarm policies, and push back against the radical left.”

During his tenure as chairman, he raised more than $8.5 million, setting fundraising and attendance records, and helping organize the largest political event in Alabama history: the Cullman Trump Rally.

Wahl played a key leadership role in the 2024 Trump campaign, helping raise more than $2 million and mobilizing volunteers who knocked on more than 100,000 doors in critical swing states.

“As Chairman of the Alabama Republican Party, I’ve been on the front lines defending our values and fighting for our freedoms,” Wahl said. “Now, I’m ready to take that fight to the Lieutenant Governor’s office. It’s time to secure our elections, rebuild our economy, create jobs, cut taxes, lower regulations, put parents back in control of their children’s education, and always put the people of Alabama first. It’s time for Alabama to lead the nation on conservative principles.”

According to a campaign statement, Wahl has also been a longtime ally of U.S. Sen. Tommy Tuberville (R-Auburn). He worked on Tuberville’s 2020 U.S. Senate campaign and later served on his transition team following the election.

“As Lieutenant Governor, I will always stand for the people of Alabama and never back down,” Wahl said. “Coach Tuberville is running for governor on a bold platform of returning power to the people. He will need a conservative fighter by his side, and if elected, I will proudly stand with him — and with President Trump — as we fight for the God-given rights and freedoms of the people of Alabama.”
