A Wednesday stroll turned into a nightmare for two women on Hillcrest Avenue in Wedowee.
Wedowee Police chief Robert Taylor said the two women were severely injured during a dog attack, in which the owner of at least one of the dogs was also hurt.
An officer responded to the scene around 2:33 p.m. on a call about a dog bite. Taylor said five dogs were involved in the ongoing attack, and when the officer tried to get them off of the victims with pepper spray, one of the dogs charged him.
“The Officer put the K-9 down by discharging his service weapon which disturbed the other dogs and caused them to cease the attack, and run across the street to a residence,” Taylor said in a press release.
The victims were taken to the hospital, and a local veterinarian was called in to take possession of the dogs. The state will test the dogs.
The current condition of the victims is unknown, but the two pedestrians had serious injuries and were later transported to UAB for further treatment.
