During a recent interview with "Alabama's Morning News with JT," U.S. Sen. Tommy Tuberville (R-Auburn) praised Federal Housing Finance Agency director Bill Pulte's announcement that Fannie Mae’s offices would be relocating from California to Birmingham.

Tuberville, who is running for Alabama governor, said he wanted to "redo" the financial district in downtown Birmingham, noting it was once a "booming enterprise." He added that the move would bring many good jobs to the area and help clean it up.

“You know, I want to redo the financial district in downtown Birmingham. It used to be a booming enterprise," Tuberville explained. "We still have a lot of great things going on there, but to bring Fannie Mae from California, which, I mean, it's a disaster out there. Everybody's leaving California. Chevron just announced, 'Hey, we're going to lose a billion dollars, but we're out of this place.' I mean, this place has lost its mind. And so, Fannie Mae's coming. It'll be a lot of jobs, a lot of real good jobs."

"And I think it'll be a huge boost to our banking system, the people that work in the banking system," he continued. "And again, I want to move it. Everybody, I'm getting calls, 'Let's put it here, put it there.' We're going to put it downtown Birmingham. And I want to try to help it and continue to grow. It's had a lot of bad hits in the last few years just because of the crime and things going on down there. Thank goodness for UAB, you know, a medical school. But this will enhance everything, and we're going to take back Birmingham, you know, and clean up our streets and do the things we need to do. But this will enhance it."

Tuberville noted that the Magic City had been surpassed by Huntsville and said that Fannie Mae would help bring growth in Birmingham.
