Moms Demand Action (MDA) has been campaigning against Constitutional carry in Alabama. So, what is Moms Demand Action?
According to the MDA website, the organization was started the day after Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting in Newtown, Connecticut, on Dec. 14, 2012. Since then, it has gone on to become one of the largest groups pushing for stricter gun laws and fighting against pro-gun legislation.
The website claims, “Moms Demand Action is a grassroots movement of Americans fighting for public safety measures that can protect people from gun violence. We pass stronger gun laws and work to close the loopholes that jeopardize the safety of our families. We also work in our own communities and with business leaders to encourage a culture of responsible gun ownership. We know that gun violence is preventable, and we’re committed to doing what it takes to keep families safe.”
MDA has made headlines in Alabama by teaming up with the Alabama Sheriff’s Association in a combined effort to fight against bills in the legislature allowing for permitless carry. Permitless carry is also called Constitutional carry and refers to the ability to carry a concealed handgun in your car or on your person without having to procure a permit, which requires a fee.
MDA is a part of Everytown for Gun Sense, previously called Mayors Against Illegal Guns, co-founded by the billionaire and former Mayor of New York City, Michael Bloomberg. The leadership of MDA consistently supported Bloomberg during his brief presidential run in 2020. Bloomberg has poured millions into MDA, counting for one-third of its funding.
Bloomberg eventually dropped out of the presidential race after nearly 40 allegations of sexual harassment and sex discrimination surfaced on the campaign trail. Bloomberg spent over $500 million on his campaign but was still unsuccessful in the primaries after a political debate that many believed was disastrous for the former mayor. Since then, MDA has heaped praise on the Biden/Harris administration, lauding its stance against guns.
A fact sheet on the MDA website, titled How the Strongest Gun Safety Administration in American History Can Address Gun Violence Through Executive Action, suggests that Biden could declare gun violence a public health emergency, thereby granting him additional executive authority.
MDA has several listed goals on its website, including extreme risk/red flag laws, helping elect gun sense candidates, and SMART gun storage.
Secure all guns in your home and vehicles
Model responsible behavior around guns
Ask about the presence of unsecured guns in other homes
Recognize the role of guns in suicide
Tell your peers to be SMART
MDA makes several claims on its website, including “The Gun Lobby Enshrines Guns as Tools of the Extreme Right” and “Stand Your Ground Laws are a License to Kill."
On a fact sheet on the MDA website entitled The Gun Lobby Enshrines Guns as Tools of the Extreme Right, the claim is made that gun rights are merely a tool used by the gun lobby to empower white supremacy and anti-government extremism.
“The gun lobby has not only enabled access to guns by anti-government and white supremacist extremists through its advocacy against common-sense gun laws but has also worked to harness their fixation on guns to shore up its own political power.”
MDA has lauded many legislative actions across the country, including former mayor of New York Andrew Cuomo’s novel bill. The bill allows victims of gun violence and other state authorities to file suit against “bad actors” in the gun industry for their unlawful or unreasonable conduct that harms New Yorkers and their communities.
Hundreds of millions of dollars have been poured into various “violence prevention programs” nationwide, for which MDA gives a resounding voice of support.
MDA continues to lobby Alabama and the nation to create further gun legislation and prevent any laws they believe would loosen gun restrictions.
