Wednesday’s Athens-Limestone County Public Library Board of Trustees meeting started calmly, erupted into controversy and ended on a note of completion.
The Limestone County Commission convened on Monday, yet a crucial motion was not discussed. If passed, this motion would have requested the Attorney General intervene in the ongoing dispute between the city of Athens and the county commission regarding appointments to the library board.
The Alabama Public Library Service held a meeting on Thursday, and the Athens-Limestone County library board was a key issue of contention. The board was accused of providing inaccurate documents to the APLS and not abiding by those submitted.
What started out as a normal meeting of the Athens-Limestone County Library Board quickly turned into a chaotic back-and-forth argument between opposing viewpoints on library policy.
According to information shared with 1819 News and policies published online, the Athens-Limestone County Public Library, the only public library in the county, has not been operating in accordance with its publicly available policies for some time.
